The ICE GENESIS project is being carried out by a consortium (led by AIRBUS OPERATION SAS) made up of 30 EU and non-EU partners from 9 countries (France, Austria, Italy, UK, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and Japan).

Each ICE GENESIS partner offers the multi-disciplinary expertise which is required in order to impact the aeronautical sector and to provide the expertise needed to meet the expectations from the participants, the industry and the European Commission.

Rail Tec Arsenal

Rail Tec Arsenal is an internationally active independent research and testing institute for rail and road vehicles, aircrafts and technical systems that are exposed to extreme climatic conditions. As an internationally recognised expert in climatic testing, Rail Tec Arsenal operates two modern climatic wind tunnels designed to optimise thermal comfort in public transport vehicles and to investigate and improve the availability and safety of systems in sensitive industrial areas.
RTA has extensive experience in various national and international research projects in areas relevant to GENESIS. Especially in the field of 1:1 scaled icing tests RTA gained practical experience by carrying out several customer projects (e.g. certification tests on air inlets also with running helicopter engines; UAV wing section tests) as well as several research projects in the icing topic in the last years. The aviation industry depends on climatic wind tunnels to test new products under extreme environmental conditions, since “in-situ” examinations are time-consuming, difficult to reproduce and even dangerous in many cases.

Role in the project

RTA will participate in WP1, WP2, WP3 and WP5. In WP6, RTA will improve the experimental capabilities for FZDZ. Based on the successful MVD calibration, RTA wants to improve the uniformity issue and calibrate the achievable LWC.
In WP7 RTA will develop a new “natural like” snow capability. RTA has long time experience performing functional and certification tests on different transport vehicles using artificial snow with atomising nozzles.
